Mention New York City and “islands” in the same breath and it’s likely that Liberty and Ellis will come to mind. Liberty Island is home to the world-famous statue which, since 1886, has welcomed people to the United States. Once here, many of them were processed through the immigrant station on Ellis Island.

A Quaint and Colorful Tour Through Oregon History

Farm History. Family History. Artistry. Bursts of color. Tradition. Community. Creativity. So many different celebrations of life represented by the bountiful wooden quilts that majestically drape almost five dozen barn doors illuminating the landscape of Oregon’s Tualatin Valley.

Floating Fun Central: British Columbia

Sometime between being shot out of the waterslide like a cannon ball and jumping off the top deck into shimmering Shuswap Lake, we declare houseboating our new favourite way to vacation.

But, of course, there will also be simple lounging in the sunshine, awe-inspiring vistas around every bend, soaking in the top-deck hot tub, barbecuing on the front deck, outdoor showers on the back deck, wine at twilight and sleeping like a baby as the water gentle laps against the boat.

Amelia Island, A Place Time Forgot - Thank Goodness!

Or maybe it just refused to move forward. Serene and unpretentious, Amelia Island remains in the early 1900s -- reveling in its long, colorful history, quite aware it no longer has to prove anything to the rest of the world. Therein lies the charm of this tiny stretch of land, 13 miles long and two miles wide, just off the northeastern tip of Florida. And abundant charm it is. Most visitors come for the beautiful beaches, award-winning golf and tennis, luxurious resorts and other accoutrements of world-class vacation destinations.

Key West – Fanciful Funk and Frivolity Wrapped up in Floridian History

A state of mind more than a city; a way of life more than a place to live. It’s a lifestyle, not a destination. All expressed in the absurdist poetry that is Key West, a language not spoken anywhere else in the country.

Mohank Mountain Lodge is a mammoth building sitting atop a hill more resembles a haunted house than a mountain resort. All jutting angles and balustrades, widows peaks and turrets, circular, angular and pointed wood, stone and rock cliffs result in a hodge-podge of architectural styles for which eclectic is an understatement.

Stay Weird in the U.S.A.

Ari and Brad Nicholson settle for the night in the most luxurious setting they’ve enjoyed anywhere. Their penthouse is lit by chandeliers and includes opulent touches like a martini bar and hot tub. The ambience is very different where Lee and Laura Hockman are bedding down.   As dog lovers, the opportunity to stay in “the world’s biggest beagle” gave them no paws (pun intended).  These aren’t the only unusual accommodations available to travelers. Opportunities abound for those seeking a unique experience when it's time to check in and turn in.

Montreal's Habitat 67 is Sci-Fi Heaven

Let's say you're in Montreal and you want to film a low-budget sci-fi film that looks like the 1960's perception of the future. Where do you go? Rest assured, there's Habitat 67. This geometrical feat of wonder was designed by Canadian architect Moshe Safdie as part of the 1967 World Expo. This extraordinary experimental housing complex is made up of modular concrete units.

Journey to Socrates Sculpture Garden in Long Island City

When venturing around Long Island City in Queens - be sure to grab bike and peddle to Socrates Sculpture Park. Located right smack on the East River, Socrates Sculpture Park is dedicated to large-scale sculpture and multimedia installations in a park built on a former landfill site. Yes, this cool artistic hub was once an ugly abandoned riverside landfill and illegal dumpsite. All that changed in 1986, when a coalition of artists and community members transformed the eye-sore into an exhibition space and neighborhood park for local residents. Hurrah!

What better way to celebrate the 27th anniversary of Twin Peaks - then heading to the Lower East Side in New York, and attending: “In Dreams;  a group art exhibition inspired by the cinematic work David Lynch’s Spoke Art NYC played host this past Saturday; and had massively great opening night event for those who loved all things Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, and Lynch-ian.

Imposing as the Man Who Lived There

Having recently received a misguided shout-out from the president during Black History Month – Frederick Douglass has done an amazing job… – it seems a good time to revisit the cultural icon’s legitimate place in history. And a visit to his home in Washington, DC – surely a place the current president might want to consider visiting himself – would be a good place to start.
